A few years ago, we used to watch in delight the number of followers on our Facebook pages go up. We used to pat ourselves on the back with the satisfaction that we had grown to 1,000 followers. I admit, I was one. That was then.
Now, it’s a different numbers game. It’s about how engaged those 1,000 followers are, and what is the engagement rate.
The answer is size actually doesn’t matter. The new numbers game is engagement, and that trumps the number of followers. In fact, those 500 followers will surpass the 1,000 mark if you do a great job of engaging them.
Why is engagement the “new black”? Because we are emotional beings who want to feel like we are important. We are tired of being spoken AT and having content pushed on us.
Social media is not primarily about selling.
Once you’ve let that statement sink in, here is one fabulous tip on how to have the “jab, jab, jab punch” effect.
Follow the 4:1 ratio posting strategy:
Stay away from self-promotion all the time, and instead share useful content.
Your 4 posting content suggestions could be:
- Posting “How-to” tips related to your industry
- Sharing recipes or Fun Facts
- Running trivia contest
- Sharing inspiring quotes
The 1 post content suggestion:
- Announce new product/news and how it is beneficial to your followers
For every fourth post, share one promotional post.
Tailor your messages so they are not only talking about yourself and how great you are – have the fourth post do that! Remember the saying “It is better to give than to receive?”
Keep all this in mind the next time you post. It will resonate really, really well with your followers. Then give yourself a pat on the back.
